Brookville Veterinary Hospital

Company Overview

Brookville Veterinary Hospital exists to serve people by caring for their pets.

Company History

Dr. Jim Shields, VMD, founded Brookville Veterinary Hospital and devoted his life to caring for the animals and families of the Brookville community. After his passing in the fall of 2025, his legacy of compassion, dedication, and service continues to guide the practice he built.

Dr. Shields grew up on a dairy farm in western Pennsylvania, only five miles from where Brookville Veterinary Hospital stands today. From the age of 12 through college, he was an active member of the 4-H organization, an experience that deepened his appreciation for animals and the important role they play in people’s lives. Inspired by a desire to help both animals and their owners, he chose to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.

Dr. Shields attended Pennsylvania State University to study dairy management before continuing to the University of Pennsylvania for veterinary school. After graduating in 1968, he began his career in private practice and soon established Brookville Veterinary Hospital. What started in a modest upstairs sunporch eventually grew into a cornerstone of the community. The hospital moved to a renovated former restaurant in 1973, and the current facility was built in 2006.

Throughout his career, Dr. Shields was known not only for his medical skill, particularly his love of surgery, but also for his dedication to teaching and mentoring. He took great pride in sharing his knowledge with staff members and clients alike, helping generations of pet owners better care for their animals.

Outside the clinic, Dr. Shields treasured time with his family. He and his wife raised four children and were proud grandparents to 13 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Their home was shared with a finicky cat named Gracie.

Today, the team at Brookville Veterinary Hospital is proud to continue the tradition of compassionate care that Dr. Shields established, honoring the values and commitment to community that defined his life’s work.
